Community was the heart of Fittest in the Valley, an individual CrossFit competition comprising four events and one final in multiple age and experience-level divisions. Superheroes Wakon, Lee and Mark of MCFE spent countless hours organizing the event, which started at 8 a.m. and continued through the early evening hours Saturday at Maui CrossFit Extreme in Wailuku. Aloha CrossFit donated equipment. And athletes, judges and volunteers from affiliates around the island — and Oahu — participated in the contest, which drew about 60 entrants.

CrossFit Upcountry Maui had the following athletes participate: In RX men division: Keoni, Frank, Chris, Kaikaika and Jacob; in womens RX: Nikki; in masters 40-44: Diane; and in masters 45-49: Andrea. Andrea took first in her division; Diane took second; Keoni tied for fourth; Frank won fifth. The event was the first competition experience for Jacob and Nikki.

Here are some event highlights:

– Keoni ranked top 5 in a stacked men’s heat; his broad jump and snatch events were jaw-dropping to watch

– Kaikaika almost got a damn muscle-up (would’ve been a PR)

– Nikki won her heat in the chipper workout and blazed through pistols and 95# hang cleans

– Jacob had done one successful pistol the week of the event; he completed all 30 in the chipper wod

– Chris trains once a week on a good week, and somehow managed to smash the workouts — showing solid form in his snatches and nailing muscle-ups with ease

– Andrea is a machine. I’ve never met anyone like her — among all ages and both genders — on a local level. She is phenomenal to watch. If you haven’t seen her compete, make it to the next event. You won’t regret it.

– Diane was one of two females of all ages to do legless rope climbs in the final event. She is flawless in her movements and performs with unparalleled poise. She is the kind of athlete who inspires you to start working out, in hopes of accomplishing what the mother of three can do.

– One and a half days before the event, Frank, who trained zero days for the competition, decided to fill in for Matt, who is recovering from a minor injury. I’ve never been so proud of our humble leader. He continues to amaze me with his work capacity — but even more with his character. Our coach has a heart that is approximately 10 percent self and 90 percent others. We love you, Frank!

Mahalo to all of the participants, spectators and organizers — you made this new event one that local CrossFitters can be proud of. When community is at the core — it can’t go wrong!
