>> partner comp teaming with fun
Maui’s first team competition, Two Legit 2 Quit, at CrossFit Maui on Saturday was a success in bringing together Maui and off-island pairs to exercise hard and build community. Three workouts in intermediate, RX and masters divisions determined the top five teams that would advance to the finals. From there, first-, second- and third-place teams received recognition.
We had five athletes participating, including Michelle K. and Theresa; Patti and Nikki; and Kelsie, who competed with her sister-in-law, Emma. Nikki stepped in for Alaka’i last minute due to illness.
Highlights included Nikki and Patti earning second place in their division and winning the final event, especially considering that Nikki trained hard Friday, not thinking she would be competing the next day. I think I lost my voice screaming as Patti banged out 20 unbroken overhead squats in the final workout. Also, it was inspiring to see Theresa, who’s a decorated long-distance runner (including Boston Marathon) and paddler, conquer weights that once seemed daunting. Michelle signed up for the comp knowing that she hadn’t trained much, yet her solid movements helped carry the team to the finals. No one could tell that it was Kelsie’s first competition. She was super composed and handled complex Olympic lifts with ease. For full event results, see CF Maui’s Instagram page.
We are so proud of our crew, who always smiles and has fun on the competition floor — which is an awesome feat, considering there are tons of variables beyond our control. For us, strength in character is just as important as strength in athletics. After all, CrossFit is just exercising, and competition is exercising in front of people!
Mahalos to Danny and Whitney, our friends from the beginning of CF on Maui, for hosting the island’s first team event. It was tons of fun to have Emily, Alaka’i and I judging. Thank you especially to our friends and family who came out to support, including Kanoe, Sheila, Ron, Jason, Arianna, Eric and Elias, Elena and Kaimana.
Our island home is one of a kind when it comes to the fitness community. And we are all blessed to have bodies healthy enough to complete the tasks, the workouts, the competitions set before us. Here’s to another workout in the books!
