This year, the annual VA Games, Hawaii’s biggest team competition featuring two women and two men per entry, is shaking things up. It will now be held over TWO days, from Sept. 3-4 on Oahu; and it involves a tryout / online qualifier in order to compete.
Despite having two RX teams in the last two years of competition, we decided against entering the RX / Open division this year, due to injury, illness and life obligations among some of our RX / Open athletes (mainly the men, because we had four women ready to go;).
We are excited to recharge and just have FUN this year, as we enter the Hawaii-resident only division of Kama’aina. If you are considering entering a four-person CF Upcountry team in this division, here is IMPORTANT INFORMATION:
+ THE ONLINE QUALIFIER / TRYOUT: The online qualifier starts TODAY and extends through July 27. Basically, you must film three workouts — WHICH WILL BE RELEASED ON VA GAMES INSTAGRAM TODAY — with all four members of your team and submit them, along with qualifier payment ($95) by July 27.
+ QUALIFIER FEE: We are covering your team qualifier entry fee ($95) if we receive the names of all four athletes by NOON on July 15 – FRIDAY. You must text Kehau or Frank the first and last names of your athletes by deadline to receive this support. If we do not receive your names by FRIDAY AT NOON, the qualifier entry fee PLUS the competition entry fee ($500) is on your team. We will not pay for your competition entry fee or any travel / hotel expenses. We will offer support and ideas for fundraising.
+ FILMING OF WORKOUTS: We will offer gym time outside of advertised hours to film and complete your workouts, if you receive prior approval through Frank or Kehau. We prefer that you do the filming and workouts during OPEN GYM hours on M/W/F and SAT. We will offer support, counting and coaching, along with some filming (each team is responsible for its filming and uploading; if you would like to borrow the gym’s GoPro or iPad, you may request it) during these hours / times. If you are seeking to complete the workouts outside of those hours, you will be in charge of your coaching.
+ ADDITIONAL QUESTIONS: Feel free to contact us with any extra questions. We are excited for our teams and we are looking forward to a fun year this time around!

NOT COMPETING IN VA GAMES?
Don’t feel left out! We are excited to support CrossFit Maui’s first team competition in August at the Kahului location off Dairy Road. Also, Fittest in the Valley, the annual individual competition organized by Mark and Joanna Tablang, will be held in October. We are also gearing up to get a crew to Kauai in September for the Great Hawaiian Trail Run of 10K and 5K races, which is specifically geared toward CrossFitters. And of course, our Masters Women hitting Hana Highway in September during the annual Hana Relay, a 52-mile 6-person relay run. We’re excited for this competition season — all leading up to the most significant of them all — the CF Games Open in February!
