Are You Addicted? Take This Test To Find Out. Wed, Jan 26

From someone who’s had ample experience, close up and personal, with the grips of addiction I can easily spot it in others. Regardless the kind of addiction, whether it be drugs, alcohol, food or yes even CrossFit, they all affect your family life, your social life and perhaps your work, providing you are not a full time CrossFit coach.

“CrossFit is addicting!” I hear this many times each week from members, especially the new ones. And it surely is. It gives you a great high. You feel good knowing you pushed yourself harder than you ever thought possible.  You are feeling stronger every day and are amazed at your own progress.  Even though the scales don’t reflect your changing body you have dropped a size or two.  People are constantly commenting on your legs.  Yes, it’s addicting.

Maybe you have a problem, maybe you don’t. If you do, the odds are good that you’re denying it. Self-deception is a front-line symptom of the disease of addiction.

Here is a good way to find out whether or not you are addicted to CrossFit:
  • Have you ever felt you should cut down on, or try to control your WODs?
  • Have you ever felt bad or guilty about missing a WOD?
  • Do you ever do an early morning eye-opener WOD just to start your day?
  • Do you do the WODs at higher than prescribed?
  • Have you ever asked more than one coach to prescribe a harder WOD for you?
  • Is getting that WOD in sometimes more important than other things in your life?
  • Is doing a WOD more important than staying home visiting with your in-laws here from the mainland for three weeks???
  • Have you ever switched from one box to the other just to prove you are not addicted?
  • Has your crossfit.com computer time caused trouble at home or at work?
  • Are those around you annoyed by your incessant talk about CrossFit?
  • Have you ever gone to work or driven a car while your endorphins were over the legal limit?
  • Do you need to resort to a WOD in order to do something or change how you feel?
  • Do you notice you need more (heavier weights or coming more frequently) in order to get satisfaction?
  • Do you panic when you have to go somewhere and you learn there is not a box within driving distance?
  • Do the people you hang out with do CrossFit?
  • Do you try to avoid your friends who don’t?
  • Has a doctor ever found signs of Rabdo and warned you to take a break?

If you answered yes to more than five of these questions, chances are you are a full blown CrossFit junkie! Do not despair! Rumor has it CrossFit HQ will soon be offering a specialty rehab certification.  One full weekend, only $1000! And surely there will be one coming to a city near you very soon! So for now, hang on and just take it one WOD at a time.
