“Paleolithic Living”

Our resident nutrition expert, Kinsey Jackson will be hosting a 3-part “Paleolithic Living” series starting this Saturday!  The lectures will run from 8:30am-10:00am every other Saturday. We strongly suggest you hit all three as the information builds upon the previous class. Drop in for $10 class, or all three for $25 (register online today!)

October 22nd: Paleo 101
An introduction to the Paleo Diet: what it is, a brief history of food and evolution, and how eating “paleo” or low-carb in general mimics the way our ancestors have always eaten and also contributes to optimal health and survival of ourselves and the planet! We will discuss some basic science about food: the macro-nutrients (fats, proteins and carbohydrates) and how our bodies utilize them as fuel. In particular, we will focus on how the paleo diet is a sort of ketogenic diet, where we burn fat for energy instead of running off of sugar from carbohydrates. We will discover how eating paleo helps to optimize our hormones, and helps us regulate our blood sugar and insulin. A discussion of how to get started eating paleo and how to identify things at the market that are paleo-friendly will wrap up day one!

November 5th: Paleo 201
Paleo 201 will build on the concepts from day one. We will discuss digestion, and how gluten, anti-nutrients, and other contributors to “leaky gut syndrome” lead to systemic inflammation. Everything from autoimmune diseases, heart conditions, diabetes, obesity and strokes, to incontinence, rashes, headaches, bloating or joint pain is related to inflammation, and we will explain how this can be so! We will also discuss what we can do to decrease the inflammation in our bodies and prevent a host of diseases from ever being able to occur. We will see how this in part has to do with consuming the right fats, and avoiding “bad fats”. In general, I will aim to demystify some of the confusion around fats. We will also take a look at some specific sugars and see why current research is suggesting that fructose and other easily fermentable sugars may be a serious health risk for many individuals. We will talk about the sources of “FODMAPs” and how to avoid or minimize them in your diet! If time allows, we will touch on “smart supplementation” and what Robb Wolf thinks we should all be supplementing with.

November 19th: Paleo 301
Now that the diet is dialed in, we will focus on the other two parts of the “Paleo Pyramid”, which are sleep and exercise. Today we will understand why we are meant to exercise and how the right type of exercise can help us optimize our human potential! We will examine how our Crossfit workouts help to regulate our neuro-endocrine response and discuss how eating paleo in conjunction with doing regular Crossfit exercise and getting enough sleep will help us regulate our blood sugar, hormones, and in general allow us to live life to it’s fullest! We will wrap up our third and final day by talking about how to implement the the paleo diet into our lives and make it work for us realistically.  I will offer additional resources for further information and study so that you can continue the journey with getting back to being “primal.”
