CrossFit Upcountry has a long history with the annual 52-mile Hana Relay. The decades-old event is arguably the most popular race on the island, which draws 100 teams of six people each year and sells out within hours. Over the course of six consecutive years entering two to three teams, CF Upcountry has always enjoyed a top ranking team.

This year, CF Upcountry Maui Ohana, comprising Theresa, Eric, Elias, Jake, Brandye and Nic, won their mixed division and ranked fifth overall, which is a huge feat. “Elias crushed the first leg 16:59 for 2.4 miles,” Theresa said. “Eric ran 6:30s for his last leg, which he regretted this morning when he tried to climb out of bed.”

The second CF Upcountry mixed team was led by Keely, who is notorious for having a fun team. This year she rallied Yigit for his first Hāna Relay, and she picked up Justin, who’s coming off the Aloha Games competition last weekend.
“It was great,” Yigit said. “(We finished at) 7hours 37 minutes I think. . . . and not much drinking, lots of beaching, jumping from rocks and swimming under waterfalls.”

Veteran relay runner Keely agreed.
“We had a blast,” she said. “It was so hot but so fun!”

Theresa said Brandye was the rockstar pinch hitter of her team. The new CF Upcountry joined the crew Thursday before the Saturday relay when another person canceled.

“With almost no recent running, (Brandye) hammered all three legs,” Theresa said.

Coach Korey met up with the winning mixed crew on the final leg. He pulled up in his police SUV and hit the siren — Elias jumped about a foot. Then everyone jammed to the finish for the potato sack finish, Theresa said.

The near future won’t provide much rest for Theresa and her fit family. She is coaching paddling: Maui to Moloka’i next week and Moloka’i to Oahu week after.

Maybe after that, the speedster will slow down.

Congratulations to both teams and to everyone who completed the 2018 Hana Relay!
